For more than 12 days and counting, a loving husband has been sending bouquets of flowers to his wife to give her strength while she fights the new coronavirus disease at the hospital.
Kay Pelican could not stay by his wife Chenella’s side due to hospital visitor restrictions, as per People yesterday, Aug. 19.
The 44-year-old woman was admitted to the Lafayette General Health in Louisiana, United States earlier this month. Pelican began sending flowers to his wife on Aug. 5, in the hopes that it would show his love for her even from afar, and he has not stopped since.
The hospital also showed the colorful rose arrangements in various sizes that the 43-year-old man sends, via its Facebook page on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
“Romance can get a little complicated when a spouse is hospitalized for #COVID19,” the hospital said. “But that hasn’t stopped one man who’s been sending flowers daily since his wife has been in our facility — 12 days and counting!”
The hospital noted that Pelican’s “perspective makes our nurses’ day as much as his wife’s.”
“Here’s to love in the time of COVID,” the hospital added.
“Usually when one of us is in the hospital, we sit with each other, so this was the only way I could be there,” Pelican was quoted as saying.
“I can’t be by her bedside but I gotta let her know in some kind of way that I’m there,” he added.
While Chenella is still confined, the couple has been communicating through video calls facilitated by the hospital nurses. Pelican said that his wife is currently unable to talk but is aware of the flower deliveries.
Despite going viral due to the hospital’s post, the husband clarified that he was not doing the gesture for recognition.
“That’s the woman that I’ve been with for 20 years and been married to for 19,” he said in the report. “I do things like that because we’ve been together so long and it means so much to her and means so much to me.”
A manager at the hospital, Michelle Broussard, admitted that Pelican’s actions “boosted their morale” in the hospital.
“Although the pandemic is scary and we are all adjusting to this new normal, there is still plenty of good happening all around us,” Broussard was quoted as saying. “In the midst of uncertainty, love really does prevail.” Cha Lino/JB
