13 aftershocks recorded after magnitude 6.6 quake hits Masbate, nearby provinces

At the epicenter of the quake in Cataingan, houses are toppled.

MANILA, Philippines — State seismologists have so far recorded 13 aftershocks after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck provinces in the Bicol Region and Visayas on Tuesday morning.

“Magkakaroon ng aftershocks at ito ay nangyayari na. So far, we have located 13 aftershocks at nagkaroon ng pinamalakas na magnitude na 3.8,” Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) director Renato Solidum said in an online press briefing that explains the magnitude 6.6 quake.

(There will be aftershocks and this already happened. So far, we have located 13 aftershocks and the highest magnitude is at 3.8.)

Earlier, Phivolcs said the tremor was felt in the Bicol provinces, in the Visayas and in Quezon province at 8:03 a.m. According to the police, the old and new Cataingan Public markets, the Cataingan Municipal police station, and the docking area of Cataingan Port were damaged by the quake.

Solidum said the earthquake was caused by the movement of the Masbate segment of the Philippine fault zone.
