A teacher was suspended after he taught an online class without a shirt on last Friday, Aug. 14, violating his school’s dress code.
The educator (name withheld) works for the Silver Creek High School in California, United States, as per The Mercury News on the same day.
During his class, Elizabeth Avila’s daughter, a freshman, noted that he did not follow the school’s dress code for distance learning. The teacher had also spoken about the policy himself just days before.
The student then took a photo of the lecturer and called Avila. The concerned mother quickly talked to the school about the situation.
The teenager felt uncomfortable and could not concentrate on the lesson “because all she was seeing was this old man on camera in her bedroom,” Avila said in the report.
Following the call, the institution assured Avila that the teacher was placed on administrative leave. Superintendent Chris Funk refused to release information on the teacher, who was hired by the school district.
“I will say that the behavior is unacceptable, unprofessional and violates several district policies,” Funk was quoted as saying.
An investigation into the situation has already been launched while the teacher is suspended. Despite the school’s response, Avila is worried that the educator may show other problematic behavior in the future.
She also recalled her child’s response as she noted, “I was just glad that my daughter realized, ‘Hey, this isn’t right’ and said something.”
Avila then stressed that the teacher must be removed, citing that the issue should be “one of those zero-tolerance type of things.”
“If he thinks this is OK, what more is going to happen later if we let it slide?” she added.
While the mother understands that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made schools adjust to distance learning, she stressed that the teacher should be professional and “put a shirt on.”
The report also noted that the weather in the area at the time reached a record-high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit. However, it is unclear if the temperature was a factor in the teacher’s decision to forego a top. Ryan Arcadio/JB
