5.0-magnitude quake rocks Batanes

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit Sabtang, Batanes, on Sunday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 40 kilometers southeast of Sabtang, Batanes, at 10:53 a.m.

An Intensity V was recorded over Sabtang, Batanes while an Intensity IV was registered over Uyugan, Ivana, Mahatao, and Basco, Batanes.

Meanwhile, an Intensity III was felt over Itbayat, Batanes.

The quake had a depth of 1 kilometer and was tectonic in origin.

Damage and aftershocks could be expected from the temblor, Phivolcs warned.
