MANILA, Philippines — The Chinese Embassy in Manila donated on Friday P1 million and sets of personal protective equipment (PPEs) to Filipino medical frontliners.
In a statement, the embassy said it made the donation as a “token of appreciation and support” for the healthcare workers’ hard work in battling the coronavirus pandemic.
Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian met with representatives of medical frontliners to turn over the cash and PPE sets at the embassy in Makati.
Huang, the embassy said, expressed hope that healthcare workers “could always stay safe and healthy as the last line of defense so as to make continued contributions to COVID-19 fight.”
“We firmly believe that the dawn of victory will come at the earliest,” the ambassador said.
The embassy noted that it has donated several batches of surgical masks to several
local hospitals in previous days.
As of August 14, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surpassed 153,000 with over 6,000 new infections reported.
Of the number, 71,405 have recovered while 2,442 have died.
Globally, over 20.4 million individuals have so far been infected by the new coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan City in China’s Hubei province late last year. More than 744,000 have died from the disease across the world. [ac]
