MANILA, Philippines — The All UP (University of the Philippines) Workers Union – Manila chapter on Friday called on the leadership of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to “immediately resolve the sad plight” of its health workers attending to coronavirus disease patients.

In a statement sent to the media and posted on Facebook on Friday, the group called on the PGH administration and the national government to heed its call for mass hiring of health workers with regular positions, implement P16,000 national minimum wage, regularize contractual workers, and release the special risk allowance to all health workers.

They also appealed for a P500 per day COVID-19 hazard pay on top of the existing hazard pay, provision of P100,000 to all COVID-19 positive healthcare workers, and implementation of a seven-day work with two-weeks quarantine work schedule.

INQUIRER.net is still seeking comments from the PGH administration as of posting time.

From February 3 until August 13, a total of 1,261 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been admitted at the hospital, according to PGH’s data. Of this number, 197 have died. A total of 905 patients have recovered and were discharged.

Meanwhile, 149 confirmed COVID-19 patients, 19 probable, and six suspected cases are currently admitted at the hospital as of Thursday night. There are also 174 admitted COVID-19 patients but their classification is not yet clear.

Since March 30, PGH has already conducted 7,323 tests on its healthcare workers, including a total of 439 tests that yielded positive results.
