MANILA, Philippines—The impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona is one of the brightest moments of the Liberal Party, President Benigno Aquino III said on Friday night.

Aquino made the statement in a speech at a gathering on the estate of former Senator Manuel Roxas II’s family in Cubao, Quezon City, marking the Liberal Party’s 66th anniversary.

“Last December, we and our Liberal Party congressmen had a get-together with others who may not have been Liberal in name but are Liberal in their heart and deed,” the President said. “They are our partners in laying out the measures to reform the judiciary.”

“I mentioned that gathering,” Mr. Aquino added, “because it was one of the brightest signs that the Liberal [Party] will not waver.”

“We will not shirk our duty, we will not deviate from the path of principle, and we will not betray the people,” he said.

The House of Representatives, on the strength of 188 sigmatories, endorsed to the Senate last December the articles of impeachment against Corona.
