MANILA, Philippines — On Aug. 10, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet composed of the ships San Antonio, Concepcion, Victoria, Santiago and the flagship, the Trinidad, sailed from Seville, Spain.
His fleet landed in the Philippines in March 1521. But after Magellan got involved in a rivalry between two local chieftains, Humabon and Lapu-Lapu, he was killed by a poison arrow while attacking Lapu-Lapu’s people on April 27, 1521.
His crew left his body behind and continued in the single ship that remained, captained by Juan Sebastian Elcano. They returned to Spain in September 1522.
