Samar girl dies from COVID-19

TACLOBAN CITY — A 14-year-old girl from Calbayog City in Samar died of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in a hospital on Monday, August 3.

Dr. Exuperia Sabalberino, assistant regional director of the Department of Health, said the girl was first admitted at the Calbayog District Hospital last July 25 due to fever, cough, and vomiting.

On August 1, her family had her discharged against the advice of the doctors.

Hours later, she had trouble breathing, prompting her family to bring her to the St. Camillus Hospital, also in Calbayog City.

The family, however, was advised by physicians to bring the girl to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) in Tacloban City.

The girl died at 8:30 a.m. on August 3.

She was later found to have contracted the COVID-19.

Her family brought her remains on August 4 to Calbayog City where she was buried immediately.

Sabalberino said the girl had tuberculosis prior to her death.

She said the health personnel of Calbayog City were conducting contact tracing to identify those who had close contact with the girl.

The DOH on Wednesday reported 38 new COVID-19 cases in Eastern Visayas, bringing the total number of infections in the region to 1,035 with four deaths.
