‘The family cannot view the body’: Muslim woman is 7th COVID-19 fatality in De Oro
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—A 75-year-old woman on Tuesday (Aug. 4) became the seventh COVID-19 fatality in the city since the pandemic in March, health officials said.
The woman was a resident of a subdivision at the village of Lumbia.
Dr. Joselito Retuya, city epidemiologist, said the woman died past 9 a.m. on Tuesday. On Monday (Aug. 3), she was transferred to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) from another hospital where she was treated for cardiac problems.
Retuya said the patient had been intubated already when she arrived at the NMMC. She was tested for coronavirus and turned out positive for SARS Cov2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
According to Retuya, the woman’s body was sealed in a body bag to prevent the spread of infection. She would be buried in Marawi City according to Islamic tradition.
Shiela Ganda, of the Lanao del Sur COVID-19 task force, said a vehicle of the provincial government would transport the woman’s remains directly to the Maqbara Cemetery in Marawi for burial.
“The family cannot view the body. Only the medical team will be present to bury her,” Ganda said.
