MANILA, Philippines — Former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Resurreccion Borra died at the age of 84 on Saturday, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez has confirmed.

“Let’s all say a prayer for the peaceful repose of the soul of Commissioner Rex Borra – an excellent civil servant, an uncompromising champion of the COMELEC, and a dear friend to the rank and file,” Jimenez said in a tweet.

In a text message to INQUIRER.net, Jimenez said Borra succumbed to heart failure. It was not mentioned if Borra’s condition was related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Borra became a Comelec commissioner in 2001. He was appointed as acting Comelec chairman when former Comelec chief Benjamin Abalos Sr. resigned in October 2007.

Borra retired on February 2, 2008.
