MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Friday.
The earthquake struck at 2:06 p.m. at 34 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan.
The tremor was of tectonic origin, and had a 45-kilometer depth of focus.
Phivolcs said that the quake was felt in other areas at various intensities:
Instrumental Intensity III – Bislig City, Surigao del Sur
Instrumental Intensity II – Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
Instrumental Intensity I – Surigao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Kidapawan City; Tupi South Cotabato; Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani
Residents should expect aftershocks and damage as a result of the earthquake, Phivolcs added.
