President Rodrigo Duterte has declared July 31 a regular holiday in observance of Eid al-Adha, one of the two most important holidays in the Muslim calendar.
Under Proclamation No. 985, the Feast of Sacrifice was designated as a national holiday as recommended by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.
Eid al-Adha commemorates the prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son on the command of Allah.
Muslims slaughter sheep, goats, cows and camels to commemorate this. But Mr. Duterte’s issuance also reminds the public that the observance of Eid al-Adha “shall be subject to existing community quarantine and social distancing measures.” —Julie M. Aurelio
