1 COVID-19 case erases Guimaras record of zero infection

ILOILO CITY—Guimaras Island on Tuesday (July 28) ended the distinction of being the only province in Western Visayas with zero COVID-19 case after the Department of Health (DOH) announced that one of 17 new cases in the region was found in the province known for tourism and having the best mangoes in the Philippines.

The total COVID-19 tally in Western Visayas is now 1,158 with 16 fatalities and 629 recoveries.

Dr. Glen Alonsabe, Western Visayas epidemiologist, said at a press conference that a 22-year-old man from Buenavista town in Guimaras tested positive for SARS Cov2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. he is now confined in a hospital in Iloilo City.

Alonsable said contact tracing had already been set into motion in Guimaras and Iloilo City to find those who have had contact with the infected man.

At least 73 percent of COVID-19 cases in Western Visayas involved overseas Filipino workers and stranded persons who had come from Manila, the Philippines’ coronavirus epicenter, and Cebu, one of several COVID-19 hot spots in the country.
