TACLOBAN CITY –– Four members of the New People’s Army (NPA) based in Leyte surrendered to authorities on Sunday, July 26.
Police Lt. Col. Frederick Señal, force commander of the 1st Leyte Provincial Mobile Force Company (LPMFC) said the surrenderers, identified as Sammy, 40; Abit, 51; Rene Boy, 46; and Jomar, 28, also gave up their firearms consisting of an M14 rifle, a .45 caliber pistol, and several rounds of ammunition.
The former rebels were members of the NPA’s SRC Levox Amandawin Command which operates mostly in the fifth district of Leyte.
The four surrenderers are in the custody of the 1st LPMFC in Baybay City for debriefing, documentation, and proper disposition.
Col. Rodelio Samson, Leyte police director, said the surrender of the former rebels was a result of the “massive campaign” to persuade NPA members to return to the folds of the law.
“This only shows that the communist terrorist group in the region has already weakened its grip on its members for their cause because of the program of the present administration. This accomplishment is one of the breakthroughs in our quest to end the local communist conflict,” he said in a statement.
