TACLOBAN CITY –– At least 1.1 million students in Eastern Visayas have enrolled for the school year 2020 to 2021.
Jasmin Calzita, information officer of the Department of Education in Eastern Visayas (DepEd-8), said the number is lower than last school year’s 1.3 million students.
The opening of classes is set to start on August 24.
Due to the coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19), the DepEd has decided to use a blended method of learning, a program that uses a mix of distance and online learning.
Of the 1.13 million students who have enrolled in Eastern Visayas, 77,873 are in kindergarten, 536,116 in elementary, and 496,794 in senior high. About 21,998 individuals have also enrolled in an alternative learning system.
Gary Vacunawa, principal of the Cabacungan National High School in Allen town, Northern Samar, said at least 350 students have registered for the coming school year. The figure is higher compared to the 287 enrollees last school year.
Vacunawa said the increase in enrollment is due to the presence of transferees from other schools.
