GMA Network says it took swift action after employee gets COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — GMA Network on Saturday said it acted swiftly when it was informed that a newsroom worker tested positive for COVID-19.

“GMA immediately took action when an employee informed the Network that she tested positive for COVID-19,” read the statement of the TV Network.

“That same night, her permission was secured in compliance with the Data Privacy Act and which she readily gave so contact tracing was done swiftly and thoroughly. Those who had come into direct contact with the COVID positive co-worker were immediately placed on 14-day quarantine with pay. They shall also undergo rapid testing,” the network added.

This was after a group of workers from GMA Network condemned the supposed “slow response” of the media giant on the infected newsroom staff.

“Accordingly, workers from the GMA News and Public Affairs Department who had close contact with the patient have been notified and advised to go on self-quarantine, while others – as usual – were kept in the dark until word inadvertently spread,” read the statement from Talent Association of GMA issued on Friday.

GMA then said it “thoroughly disinfected” its working areas on top of the company’s daily disinfection.

Free rapid testing for field personnel of GMA is also being conducted, the media company noted. GMA also said it would shoulder the cost of swab testing for those who tested positive during the rapid test.

GMA also crafted guidelines for its personnel during coverage to ensure that they prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease while on duty.

“This was formulated following consultations with medical experts and Department of Health officials. Field teams were also given protective gear such as face masks, face shields, gloves, alcohol, etc,” read the statement.
