MANILA, Philippines — A total of 33 volcanic earthquakes shook Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province during the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Tuesday.
The volcano also emitted very weak white steam-laden plumes from the southeast vents. “Short-term inflations” were likewise observed on the edifice since late February, Phivolcs said in itslatest bulletin.
“These parameters indicate that volcanic processes are underway beneath the edifice that may be caused by deep-seated degassing or hydrothermal activity or magmatic intrusion,” it added.
Last week, Phivolcs raised Alert Level 1 over Bulusan Volcano, indicating that it is in an “abnormal condition.”
The public has been reminded to keep off the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
Phivolcs added that the volcanic activity poses aviation hazards.
Residents living within valleys and along river or stream channels, especially on the southeast, southwest, and northwest areas of the volcano should watch out for sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall.
