MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital on Thursday said it has exceeded its initial 130-bed capacity for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.
PGH public affairs coordinator Dr. Jonas Del Rosario said that the hospital currently has 145 confirmed COVID-19 patients, along with 22 suspected and five probable cases.
“Pag in-add nyo po lahat ‘yun, 172 patients na COVID-19-related ang inaalagaan ng PGH ngayon na nasa loob ng ospital,” he said in an interview on ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.
(If you add all of that, it’s a total of 172 COVID-19 related patients are admitted in the hospital.)
Del Rosario said the PGH has allocated “buffer beds” for additional patients who could not be accommodated in the initial 130 beds.
Of the 145 patients in the hospital who are confirmed to have COVID-19, around 80 percent are mild to moderate cases.
He added that the number of COVID-19 cases in the hospital is again rising, following the relaxation of quarantine measures in Metro Manila as well as the increased testing capacity in the country.
The hospital has also reached 90 percent of its bed capacity for the intensive care unit, with only at least three beds unoccupied.
Del Rosario said the condition of some patients with mild to moderate symptoms may deteriorate and may need to be transferred to the ICU.
