Court resets Rep. Arroyo, wife arraignment for tax evasion

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City regional trial court has rescheduled anew the arraignment of Ang Galing Pinoy partylist Representative Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo and his wife Angela for charges of tax evasion.

Arraignment is set on March 7.

At Wednesday’s hearing, the QC RTC Branch 100 granted the motion filed by the lawmaker and his wife which cited a pending petition for review before the Department of Justice.

The court granted the motion to also give the DoJ time to rule on the Arroyos’ petition.

In November 2011, the court also rescheduled the arraignment of the couple due to a pending motion for reconsideration of their case.

A total of 10 cases have been filed before the RTC against the Arroyos while another three for tax evasion were with the Court of Tax Appeals.

Arroyo is charged with violation of the tax code for failure to file income tax returns (ITRs) and failure to supply correct and accurate information on his ITR while his wife faces seven counts of failure to file ITRs.

The BIR filed the case against Arroyo and his wife for violating several provisions of the Tax Code that resulted in a tax liability of at least P73.85 million inclusive of surcharges  and interest.
