Soldier ambushed, killed by Reds in Negros Oriental city

DUMAGUETE CITY—A soldier was killed in an ambush by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental on Wednesday (July 1).

Cpl. Mark Anthony Quioschon was driving his motorcycle on the way back to the village of Banuague here when he was waylaid by the rebels as he reached the village of Luz.

Banuague was where Quioschon was posted as part of his duties in the Philippine Army’s Community Support Program.

Investigators said Quioschon suffered at least five gunshot wounds, including one in the head.

The NPA’s Leonardo Panaligan Command claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was an operation of the rebels’ Special Partisan Unit (SPARU). But police are still investigating the attack.
