‘Roadworthy’ PUJs back on 49 Metro Manila routes starting July 3
MANILA, Philippines — Traditional jeepneys deemed “roadworthy” may resume operations in 49 routes in Metro Manila starting July 3 amid the general community quarantine (GCQ), according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
In the guidelines for the operations of traditional public utility jeepneys (PUJ) released on Wednesday, the LTFRB said a special permit will not be required for PUJs to once again ply their routes.
Instead, a corresponding QR Code will be issued to the operators which must be printed and displayed in the PUJ units when they resume operations.
Operators plying the allowed routes must provide a list of PUJs that are currently registered roadworthy with the Land Transportation Office and with valid Personal Passenger Insurance Policy, the LTFRB said.
It added that a minimum fare of P9 for the first four kilometers and P1.50 per succeeding kilometer will be imposed.
“No fare adjustment shall be applied unless approved by the Board,” LTFRB said.
The initial list of 49 routes covers 6,002 units.
Operators and drivers are likewise required to comply with a series of safety measures prior to dispatch and during operations, such as checking of body temperature, wearing masks and gloves at all times, and operating at a maximum of 50% capacity.
They will be also asked to distribute Passenger Contact Forms to facilitate contact tracing if the need arises.
Failure to comply with the conditions set by the LTFRB will incur penalties from the imposition of fines to cancellation or suspension of the Certificate of Public Convenience or Provisional Authority.

The government has gradually allowed the resumption of public transportation services after Metro Manila and other areas transitioned to a more relaxed GCQ.
But traditional jeepneys were placed at the bottom of the public transport hierarchy, along with UV Express vehicles, which were earlier allowed to operate. [ac]
