Whale, calf rescued, returned to sea in Cagayan town

TUGUEGARAO CITY—A pygmy sperm whale and her calf were returned to the sea in Santa Ana, Cagayan on Tuesday (June 30), according to a town official.

Richard Alibania, Santa Ana agriculturist, said the whale and her calf were rescued after they were stranded on the coast of Palawig village on Monday (June 29).

The adult whale was 1.89 meters long and weighed 250 kg while her calf weighed some 50 kg and was believed to be at least three-months-old.

The town veterinarian took care of the whales, which had wounds caused by shark bites.

Since they were rescued during the “Aggao Nac Cagayan” celebration, they were named “Mother Cagayana” and “Baby Cagayano,” Alibania said.
