CITY OF SAN FERNANDO –– At least 4,998 learners with special educational needs (LSENs) have been enrolled in special education (SPED) classes in public schools in Central Luzon as of Tuesday.
“The number of enrollees in SPED classes indicates they want to study while our government tries to control the spread of COVID-19,” said Nicolas Capulong, Department of Education regional director.
The SPED classes are proceeding on Aug. 24 like regular classes, he said. SPED classes cater to children who are visually or hearing impaired or mute or have learning disabilities like autism and down syndrome.
Three batches of 255 SPED teachers have joined online capacity building classes in June, Capulong said.
“Our SPED teachers are very much willing and passionate about their students despite the crisis,” he added.
According to him, the online training helps Sped teachers to use learning tools that would aid LSENs in “finding and processing information, constructing knowledge, collaborating with peers, expressing understanding, and evaluating learning effects in concrete ways.”
