MANILA, Philippines — Only 36 percent of hospital beds designated for coronavirus disease 2019 patients are being used nationwide.
According to the daily bulletin of the Department of Health (DOH), only 5,014 beds out of 13,927 beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients as of June 22.
Of the 1,382 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, only 487 or 35.2% are occupied; 1,255 (39.6%) ward beds are occupied out of 3,166 available and only 3,272 isolation beds (34.9%) are used from the 9,379 capacity.
The DOH clarified that the occupancy of ICU beds and mechanical ventilators does not necessarily correspond to the number of confirmed severe and critical cases of the deadly respiratory disease.
To date, there are 31,800 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, with 8,442 recoveries and 1,186 fatalities.
As of June 22, 20,756 confirmed COVID-19 cases are considered mild, 67 are severe, 18 are critical while 521 show no symptoms.
