2 more cops contract COVID-19 as cases in PNP soar to 518

MANILA, Philippines — Two more police officers were infected with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippine National Police (PNP) to 518.

In a statement on Wednesday, PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac said the latest COVID-19 cases in the police force were two Metro Manila policemen aged 51 and 46.

Banac also said PNP has recorded 19 new recoveries, bringing the total number of COVID-19 survivors to 313.

Meanwhile, the PNP spokesman said the number of deaths among coronavirus-infected PNP personnel remains at nine. Of these, four were police personnel assigned in the Central Visayas.

In the same statement, PNP chief Archie Gamboa said he was alarmed over the recent number of deaths, noting that they will ramp up medical treatment for the infected police personnel.

“We are doing our best to provide immediate medical attention to our police patients and to help keep our frontliners safe,” he said.

The PNP at present has its own COVID-19 testing facility for police officers inside Camp Crame, the PNP Headquarters in Quezon City. The nation’s police force is also eyeing to build its second COVID-19 testing center at the Cebu City Police Office.
