Police intensify security at Senate

MANILA, Philippines — Authorities on Tuesday intensified security measures, deploying additional officers to guard the Senate on the second day of the impeachment trial against Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, police officials said.

The Regional Public Safety Battalion of the Philippine National Police’s Special Action Force alone has sent 91 of its men to ensure peace and order at the Senate.

Inspector Roex Gutierrez, team leader of the second platoon of the PNP-SAF, said that they would not allow protesters near the Senate’s gate.

Police officers, armed with shields and helmets, were seen walking near the gates of the Senate this morning, as they anticipate rallyists to troop to the area within the day.
