COVID-19 cases in PH now at 30,682 as recoveries top 8,000

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) reported Monday 630 new cases of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 30,682

Included in DOH’s latest tally were 250 new recoveries and 8 deaths, bringing their totals to 8,143 and 1,177 respectively.

Of the 630 new cases, 467 were listed as “fresh” cases, while the remaining 163 were results returned “late” or results released four or more days ago owing to the DOH’s backlog.

The DOH reported a total of 1,596 new coronavirus infections over the weekend—943 on Saturday and 653 on Sunday. Of which, 993 are fresh cases, wherein, 437 were recorded from Metro Manila, the epicenter of the contagion in the country.

The recent spike in fresh cases came three weeks into the relaxed general community quarantine, which President Duterte imposed over Metro Manila and other areas beginning June 1 in a bid to revive the pandemic-battered economy.

Worldwide, there are over 8.9 million people who have contracted SARS-CoV-2—the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
