BAGUIO CITY—Road engineers are studying four main streets leading to downtown Baguio as possible access roads for bicycles and motorcycles during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, according to information relayed at the Monday (June 22) session of the City Council.
Based on suggestions made by a local bicycle group, the city engineers’ office may designate bicycle lanes in these places, according to Constancio Imson Jr., assistant city engineer:
- Portion of Naguilian Road
- Stretch of Marcos Highway from Green Valley junction (instead of rotunda) to the rotunda of Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center
- Barangay Scout Barrio on Loakan Road until Session Road circle near Luneta Hill
- Pacdal rotunda ending on Session Road rotunda
Glenn Reyes, Baguio assistant district engineer, said the list needed to be reviewed by the Department of Public Works and Highways because revising the use of national roads needed permit from the DPWH secretary.
The proposal for designated bike lanes along narrow city roads may also slow down traffic, he explained.
The city council has requested the national government to release P18 million to prepare lanes for alternative modes of transport now that more people come out to work under the modified general community quarantine though public transportation isn’t fully operating yet.
