The Quezon City government will begin the first phase of its new bike lane project targeted for implementation next month, as it aims to provide safer routes for the growing number of people who have shifted to cycling during the general community quarantine.
Aside from setting up new routes, the first phase will include the improvement and repair of existing bike lanes and the installation of traffic separation devices.
“For our long-term plan, the Quezon City bike lanes shall be integrated with the planned bus system routes and pedestrian network,” said assistant city administration for operations Alberto Kimpo.
Among the proposed locations for the new bike lanes was Commonwealth Avenue although Mayor Joy Belmonte said she was still waiting for the approval of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
“Commonwealth Avenue is one of the major thoroughfares in our city so it is fitting to include it in our bike lane network,” she added. —Mariejo S. Ramos
