Life was normal for 7-year-old Geian Mhay Buniel until she caught a cold more than a year ago.
When her cough persisted, her parents took her to Philippine Children’s Medical Center where doctors diagnosed her to be suffering from acute lympocytic leukemia.
“I had enrolled my daughter as a nursery pupil but she was accelerated to the next grade after only four days when her teacher found out that she was a fast learner,” her mother, Lorrie May, said in Filipino.
But since she fell ill in July 2010, Geian has stopped going to school.
Upon the advice of her doctors, the young girl recently underwent bone marrow testing. They also prescribed 12 cycles of maintenance treatment to improve her condition.
“For the medicines during the first cycle and the laboratory fees alone, we will need P70,000,” Lorrie told the Inquirer as she appealed for help from readers.
Lorrie’s husband is a sidecar driver while she moonlights as a sidewalk vendor. Even if pooled together, their earnings are barely enough for their basic needs, let alone their daughter’s medical expenses.
