Duterte notes improved COVID-19 recovery rate

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte noted late Monday night the country’s high COVID-19 recovery rate.

In a taped speech, Duterte acknowledged that coronavirus infection continued to rise daily.

But he said: “I cannot say its’ a second wave because it is really increasing, the number of those infected, and those who died is [over] 1,000. Although what is really heartening is the recovery, which is about 6,252. It’s a good record compared to other countries.”

“I don’t know if it has something to do with the weather. Maybe it’s not too cold or the germ is not really comfortable in hot places,” he added.

Currently, there are 26,420 COVID-19 cases nationwide, with 6,252 recoveries and 1,098 deaths.

There has been a spike in the number of recoveries in recent days.

On Monday afternoon, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 298 new recoveries, the highest single-day increase, topping June 12’s 252.

The DOH attributed the increase in recoveries in the doctors’ improved capability to handle COVID-19 patients five months into the pandemic.
