Baguio taxi driver is latest COVID-19 patient

BAGUIO CITY –– A taxi driver has contracted the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), prompting Mayor Benjamin Magalong to lock down his neighborhood in Barangay Honeymoon on June 12.

The 60-year-old man was among the public utility drivers tested at the Baguio Convention Center on June 9, the mayor said.

A limited number of taxis and jeepneys have been serving workers and people buying food during their designated market days since Baguio shifted to a modified general community quarantine (MGCQ), which allowed more businesses and offices to open.

During a news conference on June 10, Magalong said he was not inclined to lift the city’s MGCQ until regions and provinces in the country like Metro Manila have reduced their respective rates of infection.

The driver raises the number of recorded cases in Baguio to 37. Many of the previous cases were patients infected outside the summer capital.
