Aquino expresses hope of Corona’s conviction

CONCEPCION, Tarlac–A few hours before the start of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona inthe Senate, President Aquino was hopeful on Monday of a conviction for Corona.

The President said the charges against Corona-led were “solid” and the evidence “strong.”

“My expectation is that the Senate will look into the accusations and decide based on the evidence which I think is very strong,” President Aquino told reporters after he attended the inauguration of D’Luxe Bags Philippines Inc., here.

Asked whether he would ask Corona to go on leave while the Chief Justice is on trial, the President said Corona was not asking for his advice.”Filipinos are free. It’s his decision what he wants to do with his life,” Mr. Aquino said.

President Aquino said he will try to monitor the trial but he has a busy schedule including meetings in preparation for the visit this week of US Senator John McCain. “In addition to the impeachment, the government continues to go about its business,” he said.
