Some court employees, judges file for leave as Corona trial begins

MANILA, Philippines – There is no court holiday on Monday but some employees will go on leave in the afternoon in a show of support for Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona whose impeachment trial is scheduled to begin later at the Senate.

In an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990AM, Jojo Guerrero, president of the Judiciary Employees Association, said that some court employees will be filing for leave of absences after their program for Corona at the Supreme Court. He maintained that it was not a court holiday but said “hindi rin natin mapigilan sila na hindi pumasok.”

Thousands of court employees and judges dressed in black gathered at the Supreme Court to hear a mass and join the flag raising ceremony earlier.

Later on, widescreen monitors will be set up at the Supreme Court so employees and judges can watch as the impeachment trial against the chief justice unfolds.

Meanwhile, Antonio Eugenio Jr., president of the Manila RTC Judges Association, urged the Senate to “consider all sides and evaluate all evidence on the basis of merit and truth.”
