CEBU CITY – Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that gutted the canteen of the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu early on Tuesday (June 2).
A team from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) returned to the university around noon on Tuesday to investigate and produce a report for UP Cebu officials.
In a statement, UP Cebu said the fire started from the maintenance room behind the school canteen.
The first alarm was raised at 3:08 a.m. and the fire was put out at 3:29 a.m.
The UP Cebu statement said the fire was confined to the maintenance storage room and canteen and did not spread to other buildings.
Students’ safety were ensured and there were no injuries, the statement said.
“This incident is a first for us,” said the UP Cebu statement.
“Rest assured that the UP Cebu administration remains cautious and will continue to work on improving our precautionary measures to ensure the safety and health of our community, especially in these trying times,” it added.
The Cebu City Fire Station estimated damage to be worth P80,000.
