MANILA, Philippines — Cebu City and Mandaue City will be placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) starting June 1, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Saturday.
Roque , who also serves as spokesman of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases, made the announcement during the Laging Handa online press briefing.
“Lilinawin ko po, ang Cebu City at ang Mandaue ay nasa ilalim ng GCQ na rin (I repeat, Cebu City and Mandaue City are also under GCQ), he said.
Cebu City and Mandaue City were placed under enhanced community quarantine until May 31.
Earlier, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella appealed to the national government to downgrade the quarantine category in his city from ECQ to GCQ since there has been a downward trend of COVID-19 cases in his jurisdiction.
Aside from Cebu City and Mandaue City, GCQ will be imposed in Pangasinan, Region II, Region III, Region IV-A (Calabarzon), Region VII, Zamboanga City, Davao City, and Metro Manila beginning June 1.
As of May 29, the Philippines logged 16,634 cases of COVID-19 infections. This count includes 942 deaths and 3,720 recoveries.
