On May 29, 1936, aviators Juan Calvo and Antonio Arnaiz flew the plane “Commonwealth” and became the first Filipinos to fly from Manila to Madrid, Spain.

The two pilots reached their destination on July 11, around two months later.

The successful flight was the first of its kind in the history of the Philippines.

Commemorative stamps were produced to remember their historic feat, famously known as the Arnacal Flight. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
