A mayor in Peru found lying in a casket while wearing a face mask was caught drinking with friends during the nationwide lockdown.

Jaime Rolando Urbina Torres, the mayor of Tantará, a district in the province of Castrovirreyna, was reportedly drunk when he was arrested on Monday, May 18, Evening Standard reported on Thursday, May 21, citing local media outlets.

A picture of the mayor wearing a face mask while inside an open casket, alongside a companion doing the same, has circulated online. He was arrested for drinking with friends since he violated the curfew and physical distancing measures imposed during the lockdown in Peru.

Urbina Torres has been in hot water from his constituents, who have said he has been away from the town while the country has been in a state of emergency. Officials have also slammed his lack of action during the coronavirus pandemic, such as his failure to establish quarantine shelters.

The country has been under lockdown since mid-March and has extended it until the end of June. Niña V. Guno/JB
