PH’s COVID-19 cases jump to 13,777 with 180 new patients as 85 more heal

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded an additional 180 COVID-19 patients, raising the country’s total to 13,777 as of May 23.

This while DOH also recorded the recovery of 85 cases and death of six others, increasing the Philippines’ COVID-recoveries to 3,177 and fatalities to 863.

COVID-19 is a severe respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2, which outbreak first emerged in Wuhan City of Hubei province in China in late 2019.

The potentially deadly virus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever or cough for most people but it can cause serious illness such as pneumonia to senior citizens and those with underlying health issues.

COVID-19 has so far infected more than 5.2 million people worldwide, as more than 2.05 million recovered while over 338,000 people have died due to the disease.
