MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Wednesday called on private businesses to be considerate of the plight of their workers, and refrain from swiftly imposing sanctions if they are unable to report to work for fear of contracting COVID-19.
In an online press briefing hosted by the Department of Health, Labor Undersecretary Ana Dione urged employers to address issues involving their workers “on a case-to-case basis.”
“Please take care of the workers because we’re in a difficult situation. ‘Wag sanang may disciplinary action kaagad-agad na gagawin,” Dione said.
Several sectors were allowed to partially operate starting May 16 in areas under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) including Metro Manila — the country’s economic center — to restart the country’s economy that was heavily battered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Businesses that will reopen, however, should provide free shuttle services for their employees as public transport remains suspended for the rest of the month.
They are also asked to ensure the safety of their workers by enforcing health protocols against the spread of the novel coronavirus.
