DOH: 8,245 COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — There are 8,245 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the National Capital Region (NCR) with a doubling time (the period required for the number of new cases to double) of 5.53 days as of May 18, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Tuesday.

During the House of Representatives’ Committee on Metro Manila Development online hearing, the health department said that of the 8,245 patients,  1,938 have recovered, 608 have died, 4,967 are considered mild cases; 676 are asymptomatic, 37 are considered severe cases, and 19 are considered critical cases.

Quezon City still has the most number of confirmed cases with 1,812 followed by the City of Manila (1,022 cases), Paranaque City(569 cases), Mandaluyong City (548 cases), Makati City (544 cases),  Pasig City (430 cases), Taguig City (360 cases),  Pasay City (304 cases) and Caloocan City (300 cases).

Meanwhile, San Juan City has 273 cases, followed by Muntinlupa City with 235 cases, Las Pinas City (220 cases), Marikina City (160 cases,  Valenzuela City (159 cases), Malabon City (87 cases), Navotas City (66 cases) and the municipality of Pateros (32 cases).

There are also 1,124 cases for validation, DOH said.

DOH said that only Quezon City is deemed to be at the acceleration phase of the outbreak in Metro Manila, while the rest are  in the deceleration phase.

In terms of profession, 578 of the 1,674 confirmed cases in the medical field are nurses; 513 are physicians; 103 are nursing aides; 51 are medical technicians; 21 are respiratory therapists; and 15 are midwives, among others.

As of May 18, 2020, there are 12,718 COVID-19 cases in the country, with 2,729 recoveries and a death toll of 831.
