While tourist destinations such as zoos and parks are at a standstill as the country continues its battle against the spread of COVID-19, Avilon Zoo appeals to the public to support its fundraiser for the zoo animals.
The zoo, located at Rodriguez, Rizal, is selling online admission tickets that people can use on any date as soon as the quarantine restrictions have been lifted, according to its Facebook post last Saturday, May 9.
“While under quarantine, we in AVILON ZOO exert our best effort to provide for the needs and welfare of all life under our care,” the zoo said. “We must admit though that it is quite challenging to maintain good quality animal care and veterinary services in this extraordinary time. We need your support.”
Those who are interested in availing themselves of the tickets may visit the zoo’s website.
Avilon Zoo is currently the largest zoological institution in the country in terms of land area and collection of animals, according to its website. The zoo houses 3,000 animals from 500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and fishes. It comprises 7.5 hectares of natural landscape with unusual plants and rare orchids.
After President Rodrigo Duterte placed Luzon under an enhanced community quarantine last March, the government is slowly easing up some of its quarantine measures in low and moderate-risk areas to reboot the economy.
Rizal will be among those areas to be placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) or the “new normal” starting this Saturday, May 16. However, under the “new normal,” businesses involved in leisure and entertainment, like zoos, are still prohibited to operate. /ra
