Residents of Barangay Maninila in Guinobatan town, Albay seek shelter at an evacuation center as Tropical Storm “Ambo” threatens to bring moderate to heavy rains in the province. —MICHAEL B. JAUCIAN
GUINOBATAN, ALBAY – Residents living at the foot of Mayon Volcano in this town were evacuated from their homes on Wednesday as Tropical Storm “Ambo” may bring moderate to heavy rains which could trigger flash flood and lahar flow in their villages.
“This is for their safety and security as lahar might cascade if Ambo will bring incessant rains,” said Mayor Ann Ongjoco.
Evacuated were 515 families (1,467 persons) living in the villages of Maninila, Tandarora and Muladbucad Grande.
Joy Maravillas, local disaster risk reduction management officer, said each classroom in the evacuation center will be occupied by five families.
Evacuees were also required to wear face masks for protection against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Relief packs have also been prepared by the Department of Social Welfare and Development for easy distribution to affected families.
