MANILA, Philippines — An additional 58 healthcare workers in the country have been infected with the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2 that causes the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total to 2,125 as of May 12.
The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday announced that of the number, 1,421 are considered active.
Meanwhile, 26 more coronavirus-infected healthcare professionals were able to recover from the disease. The total of recoveries are now at 669.
No new fatality was recorded by the DOH, thus the death toll for healthcare workers remained at 35.
The breakdown of the number of healthcare workers with COVID-19 are as follows:
- Nurses – 779
- Physicians – 642
- Nursing assistants – 132
- Medical technologists – 73
- Radiologic technologists – 40
- Non-medical staff – 221
To date, there are 11,618 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country. Of the number, 2,251 patients were able to recover while 772 succumbed to the disease.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the number of healthcare workers getting infected with the coronavirus is further declining.
The World Health Organization earlier expressed concern over the high COVID-19 incidence among the country’s medical frontliners.
