MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines joined 139 other countries in condemning the discrimination against older people during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Philippine mission to the United Nations in New York signed its support for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for countries to respect the rights and dignity of older persons when adopting measures against the pandemic.

“We express our deep concern over the escalation of ageism, including age discrimination and stigmatization of older persons, which aggravate their vulnerabilities,” read the statement signed by 140 countries.
