MANILA, Philippines — Tropical depression “Ambo” may start triggering rain showers in Metro Manila between Thursday and Friday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In an 11 a.m. weather update on Tuesday, Pagasa senior weather specialist Chris Perez said that “Ambo” may make landfall in the southern part of the Bicol region on Thursday and cross Quezon province on Friday.

“Dito sa period na ito, posibleng magstart na na maapektuhan ang weather ng Metro Manila pagdating [ni Ambo] sa may southern part ng Bicol region. Kung magiging marami ang kaulapan na dala nito, posibleng makaapekto na [ito] sa overall weather condition kahit malayo pa ‘yung sentro sa Metro Manila,” he said.

(During this period, it may start affecting the weather in Metro Manila once it reaches the southern part of the Bicol region. If it will have an immense quantity of clouds, it may affect the overall weather condition even if the center is still far from Metro Manila.)

“Of course kapag lumalapit ang sentro, mas lalong magiging matindi ang epekto nito, hindi lamang sa weather ng Metro Manila kundi maging sa ilang bahagi ng Central Luzon at nakakaraming bahagi ng Southern Luzon at ilang bahagi ng Visayas area,” he added.

(As the center of “Ambo” nears, its effect will intensify not just in Metro Manila but also in other parts of Central Luzon and most parts of Southern Luzon, as well as other parts of Visayas.)

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the center of “Ambo” was spotted 385 kilometers east of Surigao City.

Tropical storm Ambo is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm within 24 hours.

Pagasa said the tropical depression maintains its strength as it moves almost stationary over the Philippine sea. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Within 24 hours, the trough or extension of tropical depression Ambo will bring light to moderate to at times heavy rains showers to Mindanao.

Residents in the region are advised to take precautionary measures and continue monitoring weather updates, especially the local rainfall or thunderstorm advisories and heavy rainfall warnings from PAGASA Regional Services Divisions.

Pagasa warned that flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur in highly to very highly susceptible areas during heavy or prolonged rainfall.

The eye of “Ambo” is forecast to be 280 kilometers east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar on Wednesday morning; 145 kilometers east of Juban, Sorsogon on Thursday morning; 25 kilometers west northwest of Alabat, Quezon on Friday morning; 145 kilometers west northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on Saturday; and 185 kilometers north northwest of Basco, Batanes on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, moderate to rough sea conditions will be experienced on the eastern seaboards of Eastern Visayas and Caraga, according to Pagasa.

Fishermen as well as crewmen and operators of small vessels are advised not to set sail in affected areas.

Pagasa further said that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) #1 may be raised over portions of Eastern Visayas today, in anticipation of potentially strong winds spawned by “Ambo”.
