MANILA, Philippines — A South Korean man who is wanted for extortion in his home country was arrested in Pasay City, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported Monday.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the Korean man as 46-year-old Kim Tae Young who was arrested on May 8 along Diosdado Macapagal Blvd. in Pasay City.
Morente said a mission order for Kim’s arrest was issued following a request from the South Korean authorities.
BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) head Bobby Raquepo said that Kim is wanted for extortion and acts of violence after he allegedly posed as a lawyer to extort 500 million won or more than US$400,000 from his victim.
Kim was said to have demanded the money as purported settlement for a charge of sexual assault on a minor that was allegedly filed against his victim, BI said.
Aside from this, Kim is also reportedly the owner of an illegal warehouse that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operated on earlier this month.
The Korean man was placed in the immigration bureau’s blacklist of wanted alien fugitives in August 2017.
Morente said that South Korean authorities are already processing the revocation of Kim’s passport for his immediate deportation.
Kim is temporarily placed under the custody of the NBI while awaiting his deportation.
“He will thus be deported for being an undesirable and undocumented alien,” Morente said.
