MANILA, Philippines—The local government of Mandaluyong City is set to place Barangay Mauway under “total lockdown” for two days following the surge of COVID-19 cases in the barangay and in the city.
Barangay Mauway, which holds the highest number of cases in the city, will go under total lockdown starting 12:00 a.m. of May 11 until 11:59 p.m. of May 13 as stated in Mandaluyong’s Executive Order No. 16, series of 2020.
Under the total lockdown, all residents will be prohibited from leaving their homes unless for an emergency, all establishments–including stores and markets –will be closed, while unauthorized vehicles will not be allowed to exit or enter the area.
Frontliners and essential workers, meanwhile, will still be allowed to go their workplaces, according to the city government’s announcement.
Barangay Mauway currently has 70 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 44 of which are active, while 23 have recovered and three have succumbed to the disease. The entire city, meanwhile, has 454 COVID-19 cases, 305 of which are active, 112 are recoveries and 37 are fatalities, as of Friday, 4 p.m.
The Mandaluyong government said the increase in cases is due to its improved mass testing method. It assured that citizens will be receiving food packs before the said lockdown while select residents will undergo rapid antibody testing.
Barangay Addition Hills, meanwhile, holds the second highest number of cases in the city with 58 confirmed infections, 40 of which are active while 12 have recovered. Six, meanwhile, have, succumbed to COVID-19.
The Welfareville compound in the said barangay has been placed under a week-long total lockdown since Thursday. The city also seeks to conduct rapid testing on 3,000 residents of Barangay Addition Hills.
The country currently has 10,463 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 1,174 recoveries and 696 deaths. In a situation report, the World Health Organization stated that 86.7% of all cases in the country are mild.
