MANILA, Philippines — Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has filed a resolution at the Senate calling for an assessment of the school system and the precautions in place amid the COVID-19 pandemic as classes start physically on August 24.

Ang gusto natin tutukuan ay yung number one tinatawag nating safe schools,” he said during a Laging Handa briefing on Saturday.

Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts, and Culture, underscored the importance of allocating budget for disinfection of schools.

“Dapat ang ating mga eskwelahan ay ligtas para sa ating mag-aaral pagdating ng August 24 at may budget na pwedeng gamitin,” the senator said.

Gatchalian also emphasized the requirement of wearing face masks for students even if physical distancing is implemented in schools.

Gatchalian also wants to reduce class size per classroom and limit the number of class days as the threat of the coronavirus disease pandemic continues.

(I think 50 students per classroom won’t be allowed, the number of students per classroom should be 20 to 25. If we will implement that, school days will not be daily, we should also reduce number of class days for two days a week or even one day a week so that students will not be crowded inside the classroom.)
